===============================================================================
Welcome to the TurboLog demonstrator program. This is a fully functional version
of TurboLog, except for some very minor differences, as follows:
1. There is no printed manual with the demonstrator. Registered users get a 110
page printed manual and a handy quick reference card, plus access to a range
of databases and other services.
2. This program is not callsign coded. The first time you run it you will be
asked for your callsign, and thereafter you will be known by that call. Make
sure you get it right when you enter it! Registered copies of TurboLog are
pre-coded with your callsign.
3. This program will stop working after a random period of time, some time
after each loading. What happens is that a screen blanker process starts
running, from which you simply cannot escape. Any key returns you to DOS.
The registered version also has the screen saver, but it operates after a
user definable time and pressing any key returns you to the program
normally.
Everything else works EXACTLY as the registered version. I hope this approach,
which allows you to really check the program out, rather than just watching a
demonstration, will appeal to you. Of course, I also hope that, when you decide
you like the program, the random "death" will drive you nuts enough to order a
registered copy!

INSTALLING DEMONSTRATION TURBOLOG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since you are reading this, you have already "unzipped" the program. You will
have a considerable number of files, and these should all be in the directory
you want to run TurboLog from. If not, create the directory and copy everything
across to it, then get to the new directory.
Now type INSTALL.
Select option F1, new installation.
INSTALL will now set up directories for you and copy files into their rightful
places. You can change the directory names if you really want to.
You will now need to edit your TURBOLOG.CNF file to reflect your personal setup.
There are a great many parameters and this part of the setup is a bit tedious,
but once done, you will never need to do it again! Also, when you decide to buy
TurboLog you'll be able to use the .CNF file you have generated here with the
registered version.
Now you need to look at the user manual to find out about configuring TurboLog.
There is an ASCII version of the full user manual, called TLUSER1.ASC. The only
things missing are the nice formatting of the printed manual, and the pictures.
I suggest you print out the manual, as there are lots of useful tips in it.
To configure TurboLog, you'll need to refer to section 4 of the user manual.
To run TurboLog, simply get to your working directory and type TURBOLOG.
ABOUT TURBOLOG AND ITS AUTHOR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some 6 years ago I started writing Amateur Radio software, starting with a
full scale packet BBS and then onto contest logging programs, PacketCluster
access programs and now, as a result of continual requests, TurboLog. My policy
is pretty straightforward: I try to write software that works the way I
personally like it. During the early development, or alpha trial period, I get
a number of Amateurs with differing interests to test and offer their ideas. So
right from the beginning it is becoming the work of several people.
Eventually, I decide that the program is ready for release. But it doesn't stop
there! All my users enjoy a telephone help line service, and I really do listen
to what they are saying. A wish list develops, and, in time there are enough new
ideas to warrant a new version. And so it goes on. The result is much more
comprehensive than I could ever manage on my own.
I personally use TurboLog at home. I am an active DX'er, mainly operate on CW,
and am a real fan of PacketCluster. So I can make good use of all the major
features of TurboLog. So far I have something like 10,000 QSO's in TurboLog, and
one of these days I'll get around to putting in all the BC (before
computerisation) QSO's in there as well.
Canberra Communications is a sole trader company set up to market TurboLog and
other Amateur Radio products. I rely upon the income from sales to pay my
mortgage! No doubt some (very) clever person could find out how to defeat the
random "death". Please don't! I need to sell copies to live! Support what is an
honest attempt to bring commercial quality software to the Amateur marketplace
at very low cost (TurboLog took 9 months of 12 hour days to develop!).
I hope you enjoy TurboLog as much as I do, and look forward to welcoming you to
the growing band of registered TurboLog users.
73 and good DX,
John, G3WGV.
